Andrianampoinimerina (c. 1745–1810) ruled the Kingdom of Imerina on Madagascar from 1787 until his death. His reign was marked by the reunification of Imerina following 77 years of civil war, and the subsequent expansion of his kingdom into neighboring territories, thereby initiating the unification of Madagascar under Merina rule. He is considered one of the greatest military and political leaders in the history of Madagascar and holds near mythic status among the Merina people.

Andrianampoinimerina was born Ramboasalamarazaka around 1745 in Ikaloy, central Madagascar, to Princess Ranavalonandriambelomasina and her husband Andriamiaramanjaka, a noble of the Zafimamy royal family. His birth occurred during a period of conflict and famine, following nearly a century of civil war after King Andriamasinavalona divided the kingdom among his four sons. As a young man, he worked as a merchant and gained a reputation as a champion of commoners, defending them against raids and corruption, which made him popular among the people of Ambohimanga.

Andrianampoinimerina's significance lies in his successful reunification of Imerina after 77 years of civil war and his expansion of the Merina kingdom into neighboring territories, including the Betsileo, Sihanaka, Bezanozano, and Bara lands. He established his capital at the fortified town of Ambohimanga, a site of great spiritual, cultural and political significance later designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001. His reign ended the fragmentation that followed King Andriamasinavalona's division of the kingdom, and his vision of unifying all of Madagascar under Merina rule was continued by his son and heir, Radama I, who largely achieved that goal over the next two decades.
